Prevention Hub

Our Prevention Hub cafe and communal space provides a warm, friendly environment where service users can get a hot drink and some nutritious food and this can often be a gateway to building relationships with our team.

On a practical level, service users can access:

  • Nutritious food.

  • Showers.

  • Clean Clothes.

  • Other essentials.

Our brilliant team of volunteers also facilitate a range of activities at the centre so service users can build a set of skills that they may never had had the chance to pursue.

Prevention Hub service users can also access support from our partner agencies, who have workers based at the Hope Centre, providing mental health, addiction and health & wellbeing services.

Chaotic lifestyles and difficult housing histories tend to lead to a lack of skills necessary to maintain a home and sustain a tenancy. A missed payment, a mislaid form, and an unreported repair can be a precursor to the unnecessary abandonment of a property, and leave an individual at risk of the cycle of homelessness.

Support works best when it is offered at the right time. We understand that people need space, patience and understanding before they feel ready to accept help. Our approach is based on building relationships slowly, with a light touch and genuine care. Over time, our support workers earn trust by listening, staying consistent and being there when it matters. From this foundation, they provide ongoing support that is shaped around each person’s needs. We also encourage people to rebuild their own support networks, helping them reconnect with friends, family and others who can be part of their journey forward.

For us, the root of real prevention is not simply about providing a route off the streets, but about detecting a deficit of opportunity and supporting people to build the life they want and achieve positive change. Our support is there for as long as is needed and is also provided through visits out in the community when appropriate.

Everybody deserves a friendly face, and reassurance that they’re doing okay sometimes. Our ethos of never turning anyone away and providing non-judgmental trauma informed support is an essential element of what makes Harbour Place what it is.
